This study explores the total cost of ownership (TCO) of operating linux versus windows servers.
The total cost of ownership (TCO) study provides a "quantitative estimate for the instantiation and operation [for 3 years] of a complete computer environment and network infrastructure [based on linux and windows operating system] for a small to medium (SMB) organisation to illuminate the TCO differences between these two competing platforms."
- The modeled organization comprises of 250 staff and appropriate number of workstations, servers, Internet connectivity, an ebusiness system, network cabling and hardware, standard software, and salaries for IT professionals to establish and support this infrastructure and technology.
- The model was run with two options: one purchased brand new hardware etc. and the second used existing hardware and infrastructure
- The simulation was run for three (3) years operating lifecycle
