Understanding The Three Models of a Business

This paper proposes a framework to connect three key models of a business – goal model, business model and process model.

The paper argues that a business model drives the process model of a business and the motivation for a business model can be found in the goal model of the business. In other words, goal model, business model and process models are parts of a chain – each describes a different aspect of a business and has a distinct purpose:

  • Goal Models clarify interests, intentions and strategies to answer the “why” of the business
  • Business models identify the agents, resources and events of a business to answer the “what” of the business
  • Process models focus on the “how” of the business by detailing its operational and procedural aspects.

The paper aims to connect these three models using a framework.
