CIO Role Revs Up


It never ceases to amaze me that we consider the expectation of CIOs as business leaders to be "new". There is nothing emerging, changing or evolving about this expectation of this role. Would CFOs drop their jaws if they heard that they are expected to be business leaders? Would COOs? Would CMOs?

The CIO role was created to manage IT. CIOs mistakenly took that role to mean implement systems and networks etc. Whose responsibility did we think it was to find out exactly which systems and networks to build? Why would that person decide to spend a single cent on building a system or network that did not support business objectives?

This article presents the awakening - of who knows who - to this obvious fact.
