Stage Gate Process Overview
This presentation provides an excellent overview of the stage gate process - periodic assessment and elimination of "dogs" from your project portfolio.
It is hard to pick project "winners", especially at the starting gate so one is forced to proceed with several good bets. But one makes a mistake letting them continue to their logical conclusion - success or failure - whatever it might be. Stage gate framework and process provides a mechanism to assess, at periodic intervals, the value being delivered by a project portfolio and weed out its components i.e. individual projects that are not performing.
Stage gate is critical to innovation - it allows for mistakes but then minimizes their damage to business value.
