Information Technology IT Strategy Triangle

A simple framework to understand the relationship between business strategy, organizational strategy and IT strategy.

What is the relationship between business strategy, IT strategy, and organizational design?

This framework, aptly called, Information Systems Strategy Triangle,  helps put the pieces of this puzzle together. This chapter introduces this framework that will help understand the impact of IS on an organization. It also presents key frameworks from organization theory that describe the context in which MIS operates, as well as the business imperatives that MIS supports.

Note:

  1. The authors use "information technology" and "information systems" interchangeably - the former is a more appropriate and broader meaning of this term
  2. "Management Information Systems" is a dated usage of the "IT Department" and "IT Organization"
  3. Technically, this is not a framework to develop an IT Strategy
