Why do Vendors Invest in Open Source?

Read this excellent discussion before you make up your mind on the business case for open source systems.


Think about it: why would anyone do anything for "free?" Essentially someone - a "for profit" business for that matter - is spending money on your behalf! Doesn't happen. Shouldn't happen!!

So, why should we care? Because we want to unlock the key to the value proposition of "open source" and the key lies in the motivation of its creators/providers/inventors/mavericks...for only when we understand the players of an ecosystem do we begin to understand our place in it!
