Seagate releases second-gen Momentus XT hybrid dri

Seagate has released its second-generation Momentus XT hybrid, which combines 750GB of mechanical storage with 8GB of flash memory inside a 2.5" notebook drive. An OS-independent Adaptive Memory scheme uses the flash to cache data for reads, but the drive can't cache incoming writes. Thanks to its flash cache, the Momentus is faster than standard mechanical drives in some situations. However, the hybrid is also quite a bit slower than its solid-state competition, and the $245 asking price is higher than an awful lot of decent-sized SSDs. This looks like a good compromise for notebooks with only a single drive bay, but you can put together your own dual-drive hybrid for less.
