Kraljic model

The Kraljic model is a procurement framework that helps organizations to segment their procurement activities and prioritize them based on the strategic importance of the goods or services being procured. The model was developed by Peter Kraljic in 1983 and is widely used by procurement professionals around the world.

The Kraljic model categorizes goods and services into four categories based on two key factors: the importance of the item to the organization’s operations and the complexity of the supply market. The four categories are:

  1. Non-critical items: These are goods or services that are not critical to the organization’s operations, and for which there are many suppliers in a competitive market. Examples of non-critical items may include office supplies, janitorial services, and other low-value items.
  2. Bottleneck items: These are goods or services that are critical to the organization’s operations but for which there are few suppliers in a non-competitive market. Examples of bottleneck items may include specialized equipment, raw materials, or components for manufacturing processes.
  3. Strategic items: These are goods or services that are critical to the organization’s operations, and for which there are many suppliers in a non-competitive market. Examples of strategic items may include software licenses, consulting services, and other high-value items.
  4. Leverage items: These are goods or services that are not critical to the organization’s operations, but for which there are few suppliers in a competitive market. Examples of leverage items may include advertising services, marketing research, and other items that can be used to negotiate better pricing or terms with suppliers.

The Kraljic model provides a framework for procurement professionals to prioritize their activities based on the strategic importance of the goods or services being procured. By leveraging this model, organizations can optimize their procurement strategy, effectively manage supplier relationships, and mitigate risks.
